Unwanted A380's? SAD!

We need to purchase and create Oppo Air. I’ve always had a theory that among all of us we could probably run an OK company.

Based on what I’ve seen around here, we’d run both the company and plane into the ground trying to retrofit some WWII radials “because that would be unique”.

Yeah, maybe not an airplane company. But I’m sure we could all work as a team to do something successfully.

WW2 radials? Nah. We’d swap in Junkers Jumo opposed-piston engines, because who wouldn’t want to fly a French plane with German diesel engines? We’d also paint it UPS brown and fit it with manual gearboxes for S’s & G’s. Also donk wheels. With spinners.

I wonder how much of a challenge that’ll be to recycle. I know it’s still mostly aluminum and other traditional materials, but 20% of the structure is made up of composites, and I was under the impression those don’t recycle easily. When the Beech Starships were recalled, they were ground up and burned as that was the best way to dispose of them, though that was 10 years ago. (Christ, really? 2008 being a decade ago breaks my brain.)

Paint it brown and throw some Diesel-burning turbofans on it. Strip the fly-by-wire and go back to hydraulics. Sell the FBW parts on ebay.

Engines and major assemblies will be worth something. As well, the airplanes have payed for themselves somewhat over ten years.

Agreed, the engines, avionics, even fittings like the seats and luggage racks will all be repurposed, but I’m talking about the actual structures:

Kinja'd!!!

The purely metal portions are easy enough, but what about the plastics, especially GLARE .

Kinja'd!!!

I’m a bit behind on this, but are there ways to delaminate and recycle those?

Kinja'd!!!1

There are a few of us who have relevant experience.

The early 380s ophave some 8nteresting structural issues that make them a challenge to maintain. The money 8n th scrap isn’t in components (avionics, mechanical, TRs, gear and such) and the engines. They will all be pulled to support younger aircraft.

I find it hard to believe that the people that make the airbus jet believe in hub and spoke instead of point to point. It’d be good to make an analysis of how much fuel is used under both propositions

Point to point:
Why not do Dusseldorf Cancun, a route Air Berlin used to do VS Dusseldorf Cancun by using hub and spoke.

You end up (with hub and spoke) going Dusseldof-Madrid-Mexico City-Cancun (Cheapest)

Air Berlin:
One perhaps less efficient jet
Two Cabin Cycles.
Two medium size (medium cost airports)
Medium size crew

Air Berlin, Iberia, Aeromexico:
One very efficient large jet
Two less efficient small jets
six cabin cycles
One small airport
Two big expensive airports
One medium airport.
One very large crew, two small crews

However, demand can only be so much, so I understand some airlines choosing the hub and spoke model to keep some costs lower (say, an airline like Delta that basically owns Hartsfield Jackson) but on the other hand point to point can bring in more people into traveling because it’s not so expensive, or time consuming... smaller airlines can eat up market inefficiencies in smaller airports

Profitable airlines, some environmentalists that don’t know how to read, most airport ground crews.
